My Personal Experience

Valmorel, France is one of the destinations that I have first hand experience of due to a recent trip on 01 to 08 April 2013, and below is my views on Valmorel as a European ski destinations for South Africans. If you have questions that I haven’t answered here, please don’t hesitate to contact me by Enquiring Here.

The Journey:
On a rather quite and peaceful flight from Johannesburg to Paris, France on Air France’s incredible Airbus A380, and a short flight onto Geneva, Switzerland, you are immediately welcomed by Club Med representatives who are ready and waiting for your arrival on the other side of customs at Geneva International Airport. You are then whisked away from the small city onboard one of the Luxury Coaches bound for Valmorel, France.

The driving time is around 1 hour and 45 minutes which, although sounds quite long, is especially scenic as you make your way round the exquisite lake side town of Annecy before arriving in the quaint village of Valmorel, high in “Les-Avanchers-Valmorel”.

The Resort:
The hotel itself is fantastic. With a variety of different rooms to suit all guests, the hotel also offers some amazing amenities to clients, all ideally situated. Such as the Kids Clubs being located between the rooms and the reception area so picking up and dropping off children at the children’s centers, is extremely easy. The Reception area to the hotel also serves as the entertainment center which boasts a large bar on one side and a number of  Nesspro machines on the other with an assortment of premium coffees, tea’s and hot chocolates as well as a variety of soda’s from Coca Cola and Sprites to sparkling water and orange juice.

The main restaurant which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner is located right next to the reception and offers 4 uniquely decorated rooms representing the 4 seasons, and has 2 kitchens serving an extremely wide variety of cuisine in a buffet style. The upstairs speciality restaurant, which is included in the package, but requires guests to book, offers a late breakfast for those who missed the main breakfast seating and dinner with an incredible a la carte menu.

The resort also offers a Spa by Clarita*, an incredible indoor heated pool and outdoor jacuzzi.

Club Med are incredible when it comes to providing facilities for families, and this trend is definitely entrenched in their Valmorel property. Here they offer facilities for children from 4 months old! There is baby sitting* and what they like to call Pyjamas Club* as well as Baby*, Petit*, Mini Club Med and lastly Passworld which will keep guests under the age of 18 busy with some amazing activities.

*- At an additional cost.

The Skiing:
First off, this resort boasts “Ski-In Ski-Out” which blew my mind! On the lower level of the resort, you will find the ski room where you stop by on arrival day once you have settled in. Here you get measured up for you boot size, ski/snowboard size, poles, etc. Once you have found the perfect equipment, you are then taken through to your personal locker so that your ski equipment is yours for the duration of your stay and makes life a lot easier as you no longer need to walk back and forth to your room with all the large bulky jackets and beanies, goggles and gloves. It is also means that there is no queuing for your ski’s in the normal morning rush. When you’re ready to hit the slopes though, you simply gear up from your locker and then walk no more than 10 meters and you’ll find yourself in the snow on the side of this magnificent mountain range.

The slopes provide skiers and snowboards of all skill levels with 150km+ of amazing skiing. Once you have stepped outside the locker room you can then make your way down to the Gondalas that will take you high up into the mountain, ready for a day of skiing the 22 Green, 38 Blue, 17 Red and 8 Black slopes.

One great features about Valmorel which I really appreciated was the fact that your ski pass also gives you entry into the neighboring ski domain in Moûtiers, so you can experience a whole other town.

The Village:
Valmorel itself is quite small. The main area of Valmorel is 1,5 km’s from the Club Med resort (Which there is a complimentary bus that travels back and forth) where you will find a handful of bars and restaurants as well as some boutique shops and local groceries, bakeries and deli’s.

There are a number of activities that one can do in this beautiful village ranging from the extreme such as Paragliding from the top of the mountain, to snow walks where you stop halfway and share some wine and cheeses whilst inside igloos.

I really enjoy my road and trail running and spent hours running around Valmorel with the constant view of the majestic Mont Blanc Mountain, whilst discovering hidden secrets such as beautiful art sculptures donated by an artist, which have been placed all over the town, each with their own story.
